The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

The BfR's Food Chain Safety Division has an immediate vacancy in the "Plant Toxins and Mycotoxins" section for a 26-month fixed-term contract:

Post Doc Researcher for Chemical Analysis (HRMS screening of mycotoxins) in the EU Project HOLiFOOD (F/M/D)

The fixed term is based on the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act.

The job advertisement is part of the EU project HOLiFOOD - "Holistic approach for tackling food systems risks in a changing global environment" (https://holifoodproject.eu/ ). The aim of the project is to develop a holistic approach for risk assessment and management. The sub-project focuses on methods for identifying new chemical risks by means of suspect/non-target screening, anomaly screening and marker identification using high-resolution mass spectrometry. In collaboration with the project partners, deep learningand AI methods will be used. Data analysis approaches and data management systems will be developed. Furthermore related aspects from the EU project PARC (Partnership for the Assessment of Risk from Chemicals) project will be addressed.

Tasks:

In detail, the tasks include

  • Development of analytical approaches for suspect target/non-target analyses of food, feed and biological samples using liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) for the identification of contaminants (especially mycotoxins and plant toxins)
  • Application and further development of methods for data analysis
  • Analysis of samples with the developed approaches, documentation and evaluation of experimental data and their assessment
  • In vitro digestion of mycotoxins
  • Cooperation with the European project partners
  • Presentation of the results at project meetings and specialist conferences and preparation of scientific publications

Your profile:

  • Completed University degree (Master's degree, diploma or comparable university degree) in Chemistry, Food Chemistry or a comparable specialisation,
  • Good knowledge of instrumental analysis, in particular chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods
  • Organisational talent and a structured, conscientious way of working
  • Experience in the presentation and publication of scientific results
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Very good IT skills as well as a conscientious way of working, flexibility, ability to work in a team and under pressure as well as the willingness to travel on business

Desired:

  • PhD in the field of Analytical Chemistry or Bioinformatics/Chemometrics or comparable
  • Practical experience in the analysis of food, feed, plant material or biological matrices
  • Knowledge of computer science, bioinformatics or similar, programming skills, experience with AI/machine learning
  • Knowledge of analysing complex data using statistical or chemometric methods
