Chair of Biological Imaging

14.02.2024, Wissenschaftliches Personal

Here we seek for a highly qualified and motivated PostDoc (f/m/d) with a strong experience in the development of computational analysis techniques and physical/mathematical models to drive our development of dedicated algorithms with a focus on time-series analysis in imaging.

The Chair of Biological Imaging (CBI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at Helmholtz Munich are an integrated, multi-disciplinary research unit, which provide bioengineering solutions to urgent societal needs. CBI scientists develop next-generation imaging and sensing methods to measure previously inaccessible properties of living systems, hence, catalyzing breakthroughs in biology, medicine, and the environment. Comprising 11 inter-disciplinary laboratories and scientists from more than 25 countries, CBI offers state-of-the-art infrastructure for innovative research and an ideal environment to accelerate your career.

The Mission:

The Stiel-Lab / research group for Cell Engineering is one of CBI`s 11 inter-disciplinary laboratories and focuses on developing of genetically encoded agents, analysis schemes and applications primarily for optical imaging. We use protein engineering to develop agents based on our research in photophysics and structure-function relationships. These agents are employed on the level of single mammalian cells as well as whole organisms. Specialized analysis algorithms facilitate the agents’ sensitive detection deep in tissue. Finally, we also work on dedicated screening, spectroscopy, and imaging instrumentation to complement our molecular tools.

The envisioned project entails multiple aspects:
• Implement data analysis approaches with a focus on time-series data in imaging.
• Exploring machine learning architectures (convolutional neural networks, long short-term memory networks etc.).
• Building physical/mathematical models including aspects of image formation in tomography, light fluence models and photophysics. Modeling of signal for a given tissue / measurement geometry to test models / improvement strategies.
• Analyzing data in the context of our ongoing biomedical work and drive the technology to breakthrough applications in our understanding of organisms in health and disease.
• Lead laboratory scientists in the generation of suitable imaging data for testing and benchmarking (define data characteristics and goals).
• Liaison with physicist/engineers developing the imaging instrumentation to achieve a close fit of analysis and device.

Your profile:

The successful applicant must have the following:
• High motivation, curiosity, and commitment to scientific excellence
• Ph.D. in computer-science, applied mathematics, data-science, theoretical chemistry, physics, or similar fields.
• Experience in signal processing, denoising etc.
• Experience in formulating physical/mathematical models
• Background in image data analysis and analysis of time-series data
• Background machine learning techniques
• Interest in biomedical imaging
• Interest in photophysical phenomena • Team player skills and enthusiasm to work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment
• Excellent command of the English language

Our offer:

We offer you the unique chance to play a role and make a difference in future healthcare. At CBI, we strongly believe in scientific excellence and innovation. This is your opportunity to be part of and to advance your career in a world-leading research institute, where bioengineering principles meet today’s challenges in biology, medicine, and environmental health to develop the solutions of tomorrow. CBI provides a highly international, multi-disciplinary environment with excellent opportunities for professional growth. You will be part of a dynamic, professional, and highly motivated team within a stimulating environment and gain international exposure through our partners and collaborators across Europe and the world. We support career development, continued education, life-long learning and excellent opportunities for professional growth.

Situated on the foothills of the Alps, Munich is consistently ranked as one of the most vibrant and enjoyable cities in the world, with an exceptionally high quality of life. Greater Munich is also home to several world-class universities and research institutes, creating a truly inspiring intellectual atmosphere.

The successful applicant will initially have a 2-year contract, with the possibility of extension. Salary will commensurate with work experience and seniority (TV-L 13 of the Free State of Bavaria). To promote diversity, we welcome applications from talented people regardless of gender, cultural background, nationality, ethnicity, sexual identity, physical abilities, religion, and age.

Your application:

We are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive online application , including your letter of motivation, CV, and academic transcripts of records, preferably in English. Please indicate “PostDoc in computational biomedical imaging (f/m/d)” in the subject line.
