Applications in Materials Science

Reference code: 50084365_2 – 2022/WP 4

Commencement date: as soon as possible

Work location: Hamburg

Application deadline: 20.07.2022

Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon maintains a permanent outstation at DESY in Hamburg in order to provide synchrotron radiation to our users from academia and industry. At the world’s largest synchrotron radiation source PETRA III we operate the imaging beamline P05 and the CT station of the high energy beamline P07, both of which are optimized for micro- and nano-tomography techniques with a strong focus on material science applications.

This opening for a post-doctoral researcher provides opportunity to develop highly valuable skills as a beamline scientist and to gain experience in driving collaborative research as part of a cross-institutional team in the Hamburg area.

This position is embedded in the project "dtec.bw CTCentre - Digital Tomography Center for Functional Composites", a cooperation between Helmut-Schmidt-Universität and Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. By using the instruments at our imaging beamlines and the research infrastructure at the HSU, the project intends to develop new nanotomography techniques and to contribute to developing new functional composites rationally. The CTCentre’s ambition to add value by championing automated digital workflows will provide opportunity for you as part of the team to complement your expertise with highly thought-after skills/expertise in data science and/or high-performance-computing.

The position is limited to 2 years.

Equality of opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the position.

Your tasks
  • actively participate in the design and layout of nanotomography experiments at one of the fastest full field nanoCT instruments worldwide
  • correlating these high resolution data with data obtained at laboratory CT machines using e.g. machine learning
  • support users (from within and outside of the project) before, during and after their beam times
  • contribute to designing sample environments for in situ applications
  • actively participate in the CTCentre project (knowledge exchange, participation in project meetings) including administering own beam time allocations as part of the project
  • present results at conferences and in scientific publications

Your profile
  • PhD in physics, engineering, chemistry or in a related discipline
  • sound experience in processing and analysis of tomographic data
  • advanced programming skills in a high level computer language (Python, Matlab, C/C++)
  • excellent written and oral English skills

These qualifications are considered assets:

  • experience in the analysis of phase contrast imaging data
  • experience in using machine learning for image processing
  • working experience at a synchrotron radiation beamline
  • German language skills

We offer you
  • multinational work environment with ca. 1,100 colleagues from more than 50 nations
  • extensive options of vocational training (i. a. expert seminars, language courses or leadership seminars)
  • flexible working hours and various models to ensure the compatibility of family and career
  • excellent infrastructure, including a scientific in-house library as well as modern work spaces
  • remuneration according to the standards of the collective wage agreement TV-AVH including further social benefits
  • free employee advice – Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • childcare offers
  • Welcome Office, guest accommodation
  • PhD Buddy Program
