GESIS – Leibniz-Institute for the Social Sciences is an internationally active research institute, funded by federal and state governments and member of the Leibniz Association.

Starting on September 1, 2024 our Department Survey Design & Methodology (SDM), Team Cross-cultural survey methods located in Mannheim, is looking for a

PhD Researcher in Survey Methodology/Data Quality

(Salary group 13 TV-L, 75 % working time, limited for 4 years)

The department Survey Design & Methodology (SDM)  is both nationally and internationally recognized for its expertise in survey methodology, gained over many years by conducting own research as well as consulting on and implementing renowned survey projects.

The European Social Survey (ESS)  collects data on the attitudes and behavior of the population in over 30 European countries every two years in accordance with scientific quality standards. GESIS supports the central coordination of the study in quality assurance and control.

 


Your tasks will be:

Colaboration on the European Social Survey (ESS ERIC), focussing on quality reporting and fieldwork monitoring:

  • Analyzing and reporting on the socio-demographic composition and nonresponse bias in the national surveys of the ESS
  • Assessing the composition of the realized samples and the respondent behavior in mixed-mode surveys
  • Monitoring the fieldwork of countries participating in the ESS
  • Carrying out research as part of a PhD, ideally on survey methodology in the ESS

Your profile:
  • Scientific university degree (Master degree) in social sciences, data science, or a related discipline, with a quantitative focus
  • Experience in conducting data analysis of complex datasets (like international or panel surveys) is an advantage
  • Confident mastery of the statistical packages R, knowledge of further packages is an advantage
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English and German
  • Interest in collaborating with an international team of experts
