Master's thesis to investigate the influence of multi-reflection in the borehole during UKP drilling

Updated: 20 days ago
Location: Aachen, NORDRHEIN WESTFALEN

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for basic and contract research in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the field of "Laser Drilling" on the topic of "Drill Hole in USP Drilling Processes".

Laser beam drilling with ultrashort pulse lasers is a widely researched process that is used in many areas of industry. Hole geometries of several orders of magnitude and different shapes can be realized by different optical systems and process strategies. Nevertheless, one driving effect is not yet fully understood. The effect of multi-reflection of the laser light in the drill hole is known, but this effect has not yet been explained in detail.

What you will do

  • Elimination of multi-reflection in the drill hole through precise drilling at the edge of a stainless steel foil
  • Reflected and scattered radiation should thus be lost in the free half-space
  • Comparison between edge drilling and drilling in solid material
  • Schematic representation of the two cases in the figure above
  • Minimization of further influencing factors for a meaningful comparison of the drilling geometries
  • Special consideration of the thermal load due to different thermal conduction in the cases

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying physics, engineering or something similar
  • Previous knowledge of laser technology is not essential
  • You are interested in practical work and machine operation
  • You work reliably and carefully for your own safety

What you can expect

  • A professional and dynamic working atmosphere
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Excellent machinery and equipment
  • Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
  • Freedom to develop your own ideas, projects for your field of study
  • Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice
  • Very good travel options (bus, car)
  • Exciting seminars, events and team-building measures

The position is limited to the end of the thesis.
