Master Thesis - Temporal Resolution of Intermittent Renewable Energy Sources for Energy System Modeling

Updated: about 1 year ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Your Job:

Energy system models are often optimized in hourly time steps. The integration of intermittent renewable energy sources, though, puts these hourly models` accuracy to the test because they produce errors when compared to subhourly or minutely time steps. As a result, it becomes essential to downscale the time series data for intermittent renewable energy sources that are globally available.

In this master thesis, you will contribute to making latest models more reliable by increasing the resolution of time series and quantifying the impact of higher resolved time series on future energy system designs.
The tasks below are the step stones:

  • Identification of open access wind speed time series data
  • Literature review on methods of increasing the temporal resolution of wind speed data
  • A review article on downscaling a wind speed time series data
  • Improved data synthesis approach to downscale wind speed up to 1min and not location dependent
  • Subhourly modeling quantification and optimization

Your Profile:

  • You are in your master studies of economics, engineering, or a comparable course of study.
  • Interest in today`s challenges of the energy transition and the economic consequences
  • High self-motivation to solve complex problems
  • Independent way of working
  • Basic programming skills (Python) are advantageous
  • Fluent written and spoken English skills
