Updated: about 1 month ago
Location: Karlsruhe, BADEN W RTTEMBERG

Fraunhofer ISI is a globally recognized center of excellence in innovation research. Key issues of innovation dynamics and system transformation are addressed in an interdisciplinary manner and from a holistic perspective through the different research focuses of the seven Competence Centers. The institute offers unique opportunities to apply and develop new approaches in innovation research. It has close ties to numerous universities and research institutions in Germany and abroad.

The Competence Center Energy Policy and Energy Markets contributes to developing the political and institutional framework for a sustainable energy system. The intensive use of renewable energy sources and the improvement of energy efficiency are key strategies to meeting energy demand in a way that conserves resources and protects the environment, ensuring the security of supply and protecting the climate.

We are looking for a Master's student at the earliest possible date.

What you will do

Background: Are you eager to make a tangible impact in the renewable energy field? We have an exciting master thesis opportunity for an ambitious student like you! The Enertile model is used in the contact of the HYPAT (www.hypat.de) project to calculate Renewable Energy potentials with a high resolution. Join us in extending Enertile's cutting-edge Renewable Potential Calculator to efficiently calculate and optimize the hydrogen potential within the designated area. The calculation of the global renewable energy potentials would be the base for this work.

Objective: In this master thesis project, your main objective will be to enhance Enertile's Renewable Potential Calculator by incorporating advanced functionalities to estimate the cost-optimized hydrogen potential. By extending the model's capabilities, you will enable a comprehensive analysis of green hydrogen opportunities within the 6.5x6.5 km² grid, taking into account various influencing factors.

What you will do:

  • Literature review of the current hydrogen calculation methodologies
  • Thoroughly study and understand the existing Enertile Renewable Potential Calculator and its underlying principles
  • Extend the current code to include your findings and calculate hydrogen potentials with a high resolution on a global level
  • Validate the model's performance using real data and scenarios, ensuring its accuracy and reliability

What you bring to the table

  • Economics or engineering fields of study
  • Interest in technical and economic issues
  • Programming skills required. JAVA is a plus
  • Independent, structured and goal-oriented way of working

What you can expect

  • Working as a team: You work independently and take on responsibility in highly motivated teams. Our employees benefit from our flat hierarchy, which promotes an autonomous approach to work.
