Master Thesis - Data Synthesis for Intermittent Renewable Energy Sources and the Impact on Energy System Models
Your Job:
Energy system models are often optimized in hourly time steps, which are globally available. However, the integration of intermittent renewable sources in our models challenges the reliability of these hourly models as they lead to inaccuracies as compared to subhourly or minutely time steps. The minutely data unlike hourly are not globally available, hence the reliance on measured data from location sites. The measured data suffer some missing values, which cannot be deleted or randomly filled as the intrahour variability of the intermittent renewable energy sources is to be captured.
In this master thesis, you will contribute to making latest models more reliable through time series data synthesis and quantifying the impact of higher resolved time series on future energy system designs.
The tasks below are the step stones:
- Literature review on the impact of subhourly modeling on energy system model and missing data imputation method for intermittent renewable energy sources
- Implementation of the missing data imputation methods for intermittent renewable energy (wind speed and Solar DNI+GHI) time series
- Quantification of the impact of the subhourly data on energy system models (energy system optimization for cost and capacity).
Your Profile:
- You are in your master studies of engineering, economics, computer science, mathematics or a comparable course of study.
- Interest in today`s challenges of the energy transition and the economic consequences
- High self-motivation to solve complex problems
- A high degree of autonomy and commitment
- A thorough and reliable working style
- Programming skills (Python) are required
- Fluent written and spoken English skills
Our Offer:
We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We support you in your work with:
- An interesting and socially relevant topic for your thesis with a forward-looking theme
- A diverse and highly motivated working group of international character within one of the largest research institutions in Europe.
- Intensive supervision at a flexible workplace
