Objective

In the light of the increasing demand for qualified lecturers in sub-Saharan Africa the programme at the University of Nairobi/Kenya aims to the training of young African graduates of German Studies to qualify for a career as teachers of German and preparing them for an academic career as well.


Who can apply?

Graduates with Bachelor degree in German or German as a Foreign Language (DaF), with at least Second Class Upper Division Honours,
at least B2 proficiency level in German or its equivalent


What can be funded?

Participation at the two-year Masters Programme in German Studies at the University of Nairobi incl. a research stay beginning of the second year in Germany (if funding allows)


Duration of the funding

24 months altogether, beginning 1st October 2022.
In the first instance an award of 12 months is granted, a renewal of another 12 months can be applied for at a later date.


Value
  • Monthly stipend of 240 Euros (for Kenyans) or
  • Monthly stipend of 380 Euros (for Non-Kenyans)
  • University tuition fees
  • Annual Research Allowance
  • Medical Insurance (only for Non-Kenyans)
  • Travel allowance (only for Non-Kenyans

Selection

After a preselection the best candidates must apply at UoN using the method that is prescribed by the institution.
Following the successful application at UoN , the applicants will be invited for an interview by DAAD Office Nairobi (if applicable via video or telephone conference) for final selection by an independent selection committee consisting of specialist scientists.
Criteria for selection are academic achievements, proficiency in German and a convincing explanation of professional and personal reasons for choosing this study programme.
Only candidates who get admission to the Masters programme (proven by a Letter of Offer) at the UoN can get a DAAD scholarship.


Application Procedure
Application documents

Documents to be uploaded to the DAAD Portal:

  • Online application form
  • Full curriculum vitae in tabular form (according to Europass http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu )
  • Motivation Letter (convincing explanation of professional and personal reasons for choosing this study programme)
  • All university degree certificate indicating final grade
  • Academic recommendation letter
  • Copies of all university certificates on annual examinations with individual grade(s), incl. explanation of grading system
  • Research proposal on a topic you would consider for your Masters thesis (Max 2 pages)
  • German Language certificate at minimum B2 Level (onSET-Deutsch, TestDaF, Goethe Institut-B2 Nachweis, DSD, DSH, telc Deutsch, ÖSD-Zertifikat)- it can be submitted later
  • Copy of school leaving certificate (A-/O-level or KCSE)

Application deadline

Submitting an application
General information on the application via DAAD portal

You can access the DAAD portal by clicking "Application portal" at the end of the page. Here you will find an online application form in which you can enter your application data.

This is what you have to do:

1. Register in the DAAD portal (Read notes about registering in the portal >> )

2. Request references (if necessary according to the call for proposals, see "Application procedure")
The form, which has to be completed by a referee, has to be generated in the DAAD portal in the section "Request reference" after registration and downloaded. Please send the form by e-mail to your referee and ask for the completed reference form to be returned to you in a sealed envelope. References are confidential and should not be read by the applicant. The unopened envelope should be enclosed with the printed "Application summary" generated in the portal (see Item 4). Please note: If the call for proposals requires you to send several copies of your application by post to the application address (see "Application documents" in the section "Application procedure"), you will also need several copies of your reference in several envelopes, which you must then enclose with your printed "Application summary".

3. Applying online in the DAAD portal (Read notes on applying in the portal >> )

  • Download and complete the online application form
  • Prepare application documents
  • If necessary, translate documents (unless they are already in German or English).
  • Scan paper documents (except references) and save in PDF format. Please note that you can only upload PDF files to the portal.
  • Upload the completed application form and the required appendices (except references and any work samples which you might have to submit) to the portal in PDF format. Translations, if applicable, should be uploaded together with the document issued in the original language.
  • Submit the uploaded application documents online.

4. Sending application documents by post

Submit the printed "Application summary" – if necessary with several copies (see "Application procedure/Application documents") by post. Please do not enclose any other documents that have not been uploaded to the portal with the printed "Application summary" – except the required references (in sealed envelopes) and a work sample if applicable!

Information for applicants from non-EU countries:
Please remember to specify the exact contents of your postal consignment in the documents for the customs authorities, e.g. "Application for a scholarship with application documents, a reference and a DVD with work samples (no commercial goods)".
