At the Medical Faculty Mannheim at Heidelberg University, the following position is available at the earliest possible date

Klaus Tschira Endowed Full Professorship (W 3) for "Multimodal Mathematical Modeling in Medicine" (f/m/d)

to be filled for the first time.

The successful candidate should have a distinguished record of qualifications and accomplishments in all areas of Multimodal Mathematical Modeling in Medicine including research, teaching and administration. Special emphasis is placed on the multimodal perspective in the integration of a wide range of medical data from diagnostics, therapy and clinical practice.

The endowed full professorship "Multimodal Mathematical Modeling in Medicine" is located at the "Mannheim Institute for Intelligent Systems in Medicine" (MIiSM) of the Medical Systems Technologies (MST) research focus of the Medical Faculty Mannheim. The position holder will be appointed director of the corresponding independent department and will strengthen the development and application of artificial intelligence for multimodal longitudinal diagnostic data in the faculty's research focus. Accordingly, the endowed full professorship works intensively with the clinical-theoretical and theoretical disciplines at the faculty and cooperates closely with clinical-medical disciplines on issues relating to the modeling of phases and stages in the development of chronic diseases. In this context, digitized health data for the early detection of health disorders will be used for the interdisciplinary development of multimodal mathematical models of Clinical Decision Support (CDS) in the field of preventive medicine. In addition, cooperation is also expected with the Faculty's other research focus areas (vascular biology and medicine, oncology, translational neurosciences).

The endowed full professorship should be actively involved in the scientific communication of the models developed. The faculty considers the communication of complex knowledge content from digital health, especially in the case of predictive disease models, to be not only an important task in the professional environment, but also attaches great relevance to science communication for the future medical management of patients. The endowed full professorship "Multimodal Mathematical Modeling in Medicine" is intended to impact basic knowledge in the modeling of disease pathways and disease models through active participation in teaching within the MaReCuM, the restructured modular medical curriculum of the faculty.

We search for a personality with an excellent research profile in the field of the call and experience in the combination of mathematical modeling and data-driven machine learning strategies as well as their flexible application to represent complex biological functional systems. The position holder must be willing to build bridges within Heidelberg University to the “Interdisziplinäres Zentrum für Wissenschaftliches Rechnen” (IWR) and the "CZS Center for Model-based AI" as well as to non-university institutions such as HITS, EMBL and DKFZ, in particular the DKFZ-Hector Cancer Institute at the UMM.

Requirements for the application are a completed university degree in mathematics or the natural sciences, a qualified doctorate and according to § 47 (2) of the Higher Education Law of the state of Baden-Württemberg, a habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship or a comparable scientific qualification. Internationally visible, excellent achievements in research and teaching, relevant leadership experience, successful acquisition of extramural funding and teaching competence are expected, as well as collaborative and leadership skills and commitment to academic self-administration.

The position is available permanently. If general civil servant eligibility and budgetary conditions are fulfilled, direct appointment to a permanent civil servant status can be made.

Applications with the usual documents should be submitted exclusively in electronic form and in accordance with the "Applicant Guideline Format Template" and the "Applicant Form" of the Medical Faculty Mannheim for W 3-professorships (see https://www.umm.uni-heidelberg.de/karriere/berufung/ ) sent to Prof. Dr. med. Sergij Goerdt, Dean of the Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University, University Medical Center Mannheim, by April 9th, 2024.
