The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) invites applications for a full-time position (40h/week) starting 01.05.2024 as

Junior Research Group Leader Optical Remote Sensing (f, m, d)

to be filled. The advertised position offers the opportunity to establish an independent research group. A tenure-track procedure (up to 3 years with the option to extend for a maximum of 2 years) is envisaged in order to realise the development of the junior research group and to further develop your own competencies. The prerequisite for this is that qualification periods according to § 2 WissZeitVG are still available or an initial time limit according to § 14 para. 2 TzBfG is possible. If the requirements are met to the fullest extent, the position can be made permanent immediately. Remuneration is based on

TV-L EG 13.

A temporary or permanent reduction in working hours, e.g. to fulfil family responsibilities, is possible. However, the position must be filled with at least 25 working hours per week. Preference will be given to female applicants with equivalent qualifications and suitability, as this position is located in a structural unit in which women are underrepresented.

Who are we?

The IOW is an independent research institute in the Leibniz Association, for which equal opportunities, family friendliness and work-life balance are of great importance. Our research focuses on the coastal and marginal seas, with a particular emphasis on the Baltic Sea as a model region. Scientists from the four departments Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology and the new Marine Observation unit work on an interdisciplinary basis as part of a joint research programme. The new junior research group 'Optical Remote Sensing', which is to be set up as part of the marine observation programme, supports the methodological development and use of marine optical remote sensing methods on regional scales.

What are your tasks?

You will be responsible for the management and development of a junior research group in the field of optical remote sensing of coastal seas with a special focus on the Baltic Sea. Your main tasks will include:

• Planning, implementation and evaluation of interdisciplinary research projects in the field of remote sensing and marine optics.
• Establishing and maintaining national and international co-operations with research institutions, universities, authorities and industrial partners.
• Supervision of doctoral students and employees in the junior research group.
• Publication of research results in international journals and support for (inter)national reports on the state of the Baltic Sea.
• Acquisition of third-party funds to finance research projects.
• Strengthening the transfer and participation of society.
• Support and participation in expeditions at sea.

What do we expect from you?

We are looking for a motivated and qualified person with the following qualifications:

• Master’s degree and equivalent or comparable skills and experiences as well as a completed PhD in the field of remote sensing, environmental sciences, geosciences or a related field.
• Proven experience in the scientific development and application of aquatic optical remote sensing methods, preferably in coastal seas.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills as well as an independent, conscientious and goal-orientated, structured way of working.
• Competences to promote equality and equal opportunities in your field or the willingness to acquire these competences.
• Very good knowledge of English is required, knowledge of German is an advantage.
• Suitability and willingness to work at sea.

Also advantageous and relevant for the selection process are:

• A convincing interdisciplinary concept of the junior research group within the framework of the IOW research programme 2024-2033
• Proven sound knowledge in the field of data science and visualisation
• Proven success in attracting third-party funding.
• Experience in the management of research projects and in the supervision of junior scientists
• Proof of leadership skills or the willingness to acquire them.
