The Professorship for Societal Computing is looking for a full-time (100%) Research Associate / Ph.D. Candidate (m / f / d) as soon as possible.


The Professorship for Societal Computing at the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology focuses on the relationship between society and computing technologies, exploring how digital technologies influence our social behavior, structures, and systems. It also researches how we can use machine learning and other tools to better understand and improve society.

We are looking for a full-time (100%)
Research Associate / Ph.D. Candidate (m / f / d)
as soon as possible. The position is initially limited to three years with the option of extension.

Requirements:

• A completed degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction, Computational Social Science, or a relevant field.

• Passion for fundamental research in Machine Learning that can lead to the development of tools important for society.

• Ability to work independently and in a structured manner.
• Team and communication skills.

• Strong programming skills in Python, experience with Pytorch or Tensorflow. Knowledge in R is advantageous.

• Preferably experience in databases.

• Preferably experience in leading or collaborating on research projects.

• Preferably experience with publications at leading ML conferences (such as NeurIPS, ICML, etc.) or in the field of AI ethics (FAccT, AIES, EAAMO, SATML).

• Additional experience in qualitative and mixed methods is a bonus.

Tasks:

• Conduct fundamental and innovative research in Machine Learning, including but not limited to Multimodal Foundation Models, Embeddings, Red Teaming, Fairness, and Robustness.

• Transform the generated knowledge into tools and policy recommendations that can empower creators, gig workers, and users of ML technologies.

• Close collaboration with the Civic Machines Lab.

• Publication of influential research results in scientific journals and presentations at leading conferences.

• Development and teaching of courses at the bachelor's or master's level at the Technical University of Munich.

Compensation is based on qualifications up to pay grade E13 TV-L.
