Instrument Scientist (Gamma Rays and UV) in Astroparticle Physics

Limited: 2 years with an option to extend | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: APPO014/2023 | Deadline: 22.02.2024 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY at its Zeuthen location is a key partner and contributor of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), the leading future gamma ray observatory. The group is furthermore engaged in ULTRASAT, a future space mission that will map the ultraviolet sky to search for transient sources.

For CTAO, we are co-developing the simulation and reconstruction pipeline and are a lead contributor to the online software work package. We are leading the construction of the Medium-Sized Telescopes, and are co-developing the camera of the small-sized telescopes. For ULTRASAT, we are developing, producing, and testing the CMOS UV camera of the satellite. There are multiple positions open.

About your role:

Depending on the actual position tasks include:

  • Contribute to instrument development, construction, commissioning (CTAO, ULTRASAT)
  • Contribute to the management and coordination of instrument construction projects and measurement campaigns
  • Analyse CTAO construction array data
  • Contribute to the development of CTAO software
  • Supervision of technicians and engineers towards production according to specifications
  • Supervise students

About you:

  • PhD in physics or astronomy
  • Hands-on experience with scientific detectors/​instruments
  • Knowledge of project management methods and tools are an asset
  • Experience with scientific software work in (astro)particle physics experiments
  • Programming knowledge (e.g. Python, C++)
  • Excellent knowledge of English
  • Team player
