The University of Cologne is one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Germany, offering a wide range of subjects. With its six faculties and its interfaculty centres, it offers a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines and internationally outstanding profile areas, supported by the administration with its services.
The German Human Genome-Phenome Archive (GHGA) is a project of the NFDI with the goal to archive human high-throughput sequencing data and make them available for secondary research. The University of Cologne is one of six GHGA data hubs that will store genomic data. For the development, installation and operation of the GHGA storage infrastructure in the first half of the project, the University of Cologne looks for an infrastructure DevOps developer. The implementation of interfaces to the West German Genome Center (WGGC) sequencing platform in Cologne for streamlined data submission are also part of the tasks. Based at the Regional Computing Center of the University of Cologne, you will work closely with the departments for high performance computing, operation, and network. You will also join the relevant GHGA working groups.
YOUR TASKS
- Conduct research about new methods for secure storage, processing, and reuse of highly sensitive research data in a Germany wide resource network while considering regional data protection rules
- Install and operate the GHGA storage infrastructure at the GHGA Cologne data hub
- Setup the necessary interfaces to the West German Genome Center (WGGC)
- Implement the GHGA data access technical mechanisms at the Cologne data hub
- Contribute to the relevant GHGA working groups
YOUR PROFILE
- MSc in Computer Science or in the natural sciences with several years of experience in IT administration and conceptual design of similar infrastructure
- Several years of experience in Linux administration
- Advanced knowledge and experience with filesystems and storage systems (object storage, NAS)
- Knowledge in container technologies and Kubernetes
- Good German and fluent English, spoken and written
- Open-minded and motivated to push the tasks
Helpful but not required:
- Knowledge about the implementation of highly secure IT infrastructure and data protection
- Experience with Microservices
- Experience with OpenStack
- Knowledge in network configuration
- Knowledge about the S3 interface and parallel filesystems

- The position is available as soon as possible on a full-time basis (39,83 hours per week). It is initially limited to 31.12.2023. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group TV-L 13 of the pay scale for the German public sector.
