Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The laboratory of Prof. Fernandez-Busnadiego at the Institute of Neuropathology, University Medical Center Göttingen, is offering a position for an:

The goal of the Fernandez-Busnadiego lab is to unravel the structural basis of fundamental cellular mechanisms, as well as their alterations in human disease. To that end, we employ multidisciplinary approaches, pivoting on state-of-the-art cryo-ET  (see e.g. Bäuerlein et al., Cell 2017; Guo et al., Cell 2018; Collado et al., Dev Cell 2019; Trinkaus et al., Nat Commun 2021; Riemenschneider et al., EMBO Rep 2022).

The lab is integrated in the Cluster of Excellence "Multiscale Bioimaging: from Molecular Machines to Networks of Excitable cells" (MBExC). MBExC is an interdisciplinary, cross-faculty research center of the University of Göttingen and pursues a novel research approach with joint efforts in modern bioimaging, in particular photonics, molecular biosciences, neuroscience and cardiovascular research. The goal of MBExC is to decipher disease relevant nanoscale functional units in neurons, sensory cells and cardiomyocytes with the long-term goal to develop innovative therapeutic strategies for disorders affecting the heart and the brain, or both.

The successful candidate will develop computational methods for the analysis of cellular cryo-electron tomography data. She/he is expected to develop a long-term research program synergistic with the biological interests of the lab.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Ph.D. in Biology/Physics/Computer Science and extensive experience in the development of image analysis methods, especially in electron microscopy.

Your tasks:

  • Collaborate with other group members to set up project-specific data processing strategies
  • Develop computational methods for the analysis of cellular cryo-ET data
  • Establish a long-term research program synergistic with the biological interests of the lab
  • Contribute to optimize data collection strategies
  • Install and operate relevant software packages
  • Liaise with HPC administrators

Your profile:

  • PhD in biology, physics, computer science or related fields
  • Extensive experience in the development of image analysis methods, especially in electron microscopy
  • Experience in cryo-EM data processing is highly desired
  • Proficiency in Matlab and Python
  • Experience with HPC environments
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Collaborative spirit and capacity to take initiative

We offer:

  • A stimulating intellectual environment working in an international lab with innovative projects
  • Possibility of a permanent contract upon positive evaluation
