The Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF), based on the research campus Garching near Munich, Germany, is a competence centre of the Max Planck Society (MPG). It is engaged in the development and optimization of algorithms and applications for high performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence and machine learning, as well as in the design and implementation of solutions for data-intensive projects in close collaboration with scientists of the Max Planck Institutes. The MPCDF operates supercomputers and data repositories for the MPG, and maintains an up-to-date infrastructure for data management including long-term archival as one of the largest such academic sites within Europe. The MPCDF is looking for a HPC application expert (m/f/d) (Job code 2022/04)

The successful candidate will be associated with the applications group at the MPCDF and will work primarily on the high-performance eigenvalue-solver library ELPA . The main task will be to port and optimize the ELPA library for upcoming Exascale computer architectures, in the context of the EU Horizon 2020 “Novel Materials Discovery (NOMAD)” Centre of Excellence .


Your qualification:

The applicant should hold a PhD in Physics, Computer Science, applied Mathematics, or a similar subject. A strong background in the parallel programming models MPI and OpenMP and in scientific software development is mandatory. Ideally, the candidate offers a background in numerical linear algebra and has a profound knowledge of the ScaLAPACK library, complemented with some familiarity of major high-performance eigenvalue solver libraries and algorithms. Knowledge in GPU programming, e.g. with CUDA, HIP, SYCL or OpenACC is considered as a plus, but is not strictly necessary.

The full-time position starts as soon as possible and is initially limited for a maximum period of three years. Salary will be based on experience according to the German TVöD.
