Head of Business Unit - Components of Quantum Technology

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF is one of the leading research institutions worldwide in the fields of III-V semiconductors and diamond. Together with our partners from industry and science, we research and develop electronic and optoelectronic devices and systems. The focus is on research and development for applications in the fields of security, digitalization, health, energy and communication.

You will take over the position as head of the business unit "Components of Quantum Technology". As a scientist, you will lead and coordinate forward-looking national and international research and development projects for quantum technology and optoelectronic applications. These include topics of quantum sensing and computing. You will work together with the scientific departments as well as with the staff unit "Marketing & Communication".

What you will do

  • You will be in charge of the business unit "Quantum Technology Components" and responsible for its strategic focus on promising and sustainable research topics.
  • Your activities include project work in the development of components and systems for optoelectronic and quantum technology applications.
  • The initiation and acquisition of new research projects from public and industrial clients are also part of your responsibilities.
  • In addition, you will be responsible for establishing and expanding networks on a national and international level.
  • You will also manage research projects and coordinate larger collaborative projects.
  • You will ensure forward-looking, timely and efficient project and project cost planning.
  • Last but not least, you develop new business models. 

What you bring to the table

  • You have a PhD in physics, electrical engineering or a comparable field.
  • Ideally, you already have knowledge and professional experience in the field of semiconductor lasers and quantum technologies or systems.
  • You have experience in conducting public and industrial research projects and/or maintain a network and have multiple contacts with industrial, public and university partners.
  • You show strong initiative as well as commitment and are characterized by your ability to work in a team and your high communication skills.
  • Very good German and/or English as well as the willingness to travel on business and a class B driver's license complete your profile

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis. The position is initially limited to three years. A longer-term collaboration is envisaged. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.
