At the beginning of 2022, the Max Planck Society will be establishing a new Max Planck Institute – the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology of Behavior – caesar, which is the successor of the research center caesar in Bonn. The Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology of Behavior – caesar is a neuroethology institute that studies how the collective activity of the vast numbers of interconnected neurons in the brain gives rise to the plethora of animal behaviors. Our research spans a large range of scales from the nano-scale imaging of brain circuitry, to large-scale functional imaging of brain circuitry during behavior, to the quantification of natural animal behaviors.

We are looking for a

Head of Administration (m/f/d)

who will be able to start on January 1st , 2022

Your tasks:

  • Managing general administrative operations including human resources, purchasing, finance, facilities management, library, and guest house operation
  • Planning, organization, coordination and optimization of all administrative processes
  • Steering of finance and accounting, budget planning and execution, contracting, procurement and contract awarding
  • Advising and supporting the institute management in all administrative, organizational and building-related matters
  • Supervision of the institute's budgetary and economic management with regard to compliance with budgetary regulations and other provisions
  • Handling of internal and external auditing matters, as well as pre-litigation handling of legal cases in coordination with the General Administration
  • Taking on the role of the institute’s Export Control Officer
  • Ensuring compliance with all legal, grant-related, and MPG-internal requirements in administrative, financial, personnel and procurement matters
  • Representing the institute in non-scientific matters within the scope of your duties

Your profile:


  • Completed university studies in economics, administrative science, law or other relevant field
  • Relevant leadership experience in science management or in comparable areas of administration
  • Sound knowledge of the legal areas relevant to a publicly funded research institute (administrative, municipal, budgetary, tariff, grant, corporate law)
  • Excellent command of German and English, both written and spoken
  • Leadership personality with high professional and social competence
  • Service-oriented mindset and approach
  • High level of commitment, organizational skills and decisiveness
  • Outstanding knowledge and experience with relevant software applications (SAP, MS Office)
