Full Time Postdoctoral Position: Automated Kinetic Model Generation and Numerical Simulations of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) Combustion, m/f/d

Updated: 1 day ago

28.03.2024, Wissenschaftliches Personal

The Assistant Professorship of Sustainable Future Mobility is a part of the Department of Aerospace and Geodesy within the TUM School of Engineering and Design. The group carries out research in the areas of novel aviation propulsion (SAFs and H2 fuels), the Hyperloop technology as well as hydrogen and refrigerants explosion safety. Our focus in research and teaching is on the principles of technical thermodynamics, combustion technology, and reactive flows.

Applicant’s project

To combat the harmful effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and subsequently formed soot particles on human health and the environment, many governments and institutions are introducing increasingly stringent regulations. To develop combustion control techniques that allow compliance with these regulations, it is essential to understand and accurately model the chemical kinetics of fuel decomposition and especially PAH formation. While most of the available literature focuses mainly on the quantitative chemical kinetic modeling of simple combustion systems, a detailed understanding of the complex PAH formation and growth mechanisms and their influence on soot production continues to be one of the central challenges in combustion research. The proposed project targets the generation and testing of new chemical kinetic mechanisms for PAH formation leading to soot production within the context of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SFAs). Methods used will be the Reaction Mechanism Generator (RMG), mainly developed at MIT, CANTERA, and an in-house FORTRAN code for reactive flows.

Applicants profile

You have a Ph.D. in the area of chemical or mechanical engineering or information technology with expertise in Python/programming, chemical kinetics, soot formation modeling, or combustion modeling and are interested in independently investigating scientific questions and working in an international team. Besides, you will have the opportunity to engage in co-supervising students and participate in teaching.
