The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Heidelberg University invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W3) for Extragalactic Astrophysics (f/m/d)

at the Zentrum für Astronomie der Universität Heidelberg (ZAH), Astronomisches Rechen-Institut (ARI).

We are looking for an internationally leading researcher who will strengthen and shape the scientific activities at ZAH in the next decades in the field of formation and evolution of galaxies, galaxy clusters and their co-evolution with supermassive black holes, with focus on observations of active galactic nuclei at high redshift. We expect extensive experience with state-of-the-art observational facilities, including familiarity with integral field spectroscopy.

Research groups at ZAH cover a broad range of astrophysical topics, ranging from planet formation to cosmology. The ZAH is involved in a number of highly visible international projects, like Gaia, SDSS, Rubin/LSST, LCO, and Euclid. We expect the new professor to contribute to some of these, to initiate new ones, and to make particular use of the JWST and ELT observational facilities. Participation in the excellence cluster STRUCTURES is highly desired.

The new colleague is expected to participate at the usual extent to the department’s teaching programme, and in its academic administration.

Prerequisites for a successful application are a doctoral degree in physics or astronomy, teaching experience and (in accordance with Article 47, Paragraph 2 of the Higher Education Law of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg) a habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship, or equivalent qualifications.

Applications with the usual documents (CV, list of publications, statement of current research interests, brief description of future research plans, and a summary of experience in and plans for teaching) should be submitted as a single PDF file to the Dean of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Heidelberg University, Prof. Dr. André Butz: [email protected] by April 10th, 2024.

Heidelberg University stands for equal opportunities and diversity. Qualified female candidates are especially invited to apply. Persons with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are equally qualified.
