At the Technical University of Munich (TUM) invites applications for the position of Full Professor in "Cardiac Surgery“ to begin on 1 April 2022. The professorship is a tenured W3 position. The appointment as Full Professor also includes the appointment as Director of the Clinic for Cardiovascular Surgery at the German Heart Centre Munich. With 88 beds and five operating rooms (of which two are hybrid operating theatres), the clinic is one of the leading academic departments for heart surgery in Germany. The simultaneous appointment as Head physician of the Clinic for Cardiovascular Surgery at the German Heart Centre Munich is planned.

Scientific environment

The professorship belongs to the TUM School of Medicine, one of Germany’s top medical schools in research and teaching, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary and translational research. The scientific basis of the professorship is largely determined by the "Institute for Translational Cardiac Surgery" (INSURE). There is also a close cooperation between the German Heart Centre Munich and the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence at TUM to create the future of digitalization in cardiovascular medicine. In addition, there are close collaborations with other institutes at the German Heart Centre as well as with all clinics and institutes at TUM's Klinikum rechts der Isar.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the position include research, teaching and patient care in the entire spectrum of cardiac surgery as well as supervision and promotion of early-career scientists. We are looking for an expert in the research field of cardiac surgery with a focus on heart valves reconstruction and minimal invasive approaches. Teaching responsibilities include the representation of cardiac surgery in the relevant degree programmes. In addition to clinical science for cardiac surgery, the professor is head of the the laboratory of Experimental Surgery at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery. Furthermore, the candidate should support the close cooperation with the Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence at TUM.

Qualifications

We are looking for a high-profile candidate with an international reputation, who has demonstrated an outstanding academic record and an internationally recognized research program. A university degree and an outstanding doctoral degree or equivalent scientific qualification, as well as pedagogical aptitude, including the ability to teach in English, are prerequisites. Board certification in cardiac surgery is required.

Substantial clinical and leadership competence as well as leadership quality, research experience abroad, and a proven ability to establish, acquire and lead competitive and cooperative research projects are required (e.g. DFG, BMBF, EU).

The candidate should also be able to demonstrate a structured concept for the further training of cardiac surgeons and clinician scientists. For the further development of the translational concept, which has been successful so far, it is also necessary that the person to be appointed combines both clinical and scientific expertise.
