The German Primate Center (DPZ) - Leibniz Institute for Primate Research is one of 96 research and infrastructure establishments of the Leibniz Association. It conducts basic biological and biomedical research in all fields in which non-human primates play essential roles: in particular in infection research, the neurosciences and organismic primate biology. Besides its research infrastructure in Göttingen the DPZ maintains four field stations to do research on and with primates.
For a new research network to be established together with the Georg-August-University of Göttingen, we recruit/offer a
Field biologist (all genders welcome)
This is a 100% position (currently 39,8h/week), limited for two years. The earliest starting time for this position is Jan 1st, 2022.
Across several projects, the research network will investigate how fundamental cognitive functions and their neurobiological foundations contribute to human and nonhuman primate social behavior and social interactions. The network is formed by a highly interdisciplinary consortium formed by systems and computational neuroscientists, data scientists, psychologists and behavioral and cognitive biologists.
Your duties
- continuous monitoring of groups of habituated Guinea baboons
- collection of data on behavior, demography, movement patterns, and physiology
- data curation
- aid with field experiments
- maintaining camera trap grid, data collection surveillance and management
- regular collection of biological samples
- recording and coding of video data
- maintenance of technical equipment
- recruiting, training and coordination of local field assistants
- close cooperation with local and international project partners
- supporting researchers working at the field site
- working place is the DPZ field site Simenti in Senegal
Your profile
- Bachelor degree in Biology (or comparable)
- field research experience, in particular with behavioural studies on vertebrates
- excellent cross-cultural communication skills, ability to work in a team, commitment, flexibility and reliability
- very good command of French and English
- ability to work independently, with attention to detail
- capable of working in the tropics and physical fitness
- willingness to work long-term at the field site is essential
- clean driver’s license
