In July 2023, the project "Olfactory Belongings: Contested Fragrances in Urban Public Spheres" is scheduled to begin at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Free University of Berlin as part of the Collaborative Research Centre 1171 Affective Societies. Based on ethnographic field research in Berlin and Istanbul, the social and cultural anthropological sub-project investigates the role of fragrances in social power dynamics and negotiations of belonging.
At the CRC 1171 Affetive Societies, researchers from ten different disciplines across the social sciences and the humanities investigate affect and emotion in their respective role for social cohesion, be it in the arts, in politics, with regard to migration or dealing with new media technology.
In consultation with the PI, the research assistant will conduct 12 months of empirical field research in Istanbul on the proposed topic with the aim of obtaining a PhD in social and cultural anthropology.

Job description:
- Conception and implementation of empirical field research in Istanbul
- Academic qualification in the form of a PhD in social and cultural anthropology
- Independent publication and contribution to project publications
- Co-organisation of scientific events
- Active collaboration in the Collaborative Research Centre 1171 Affective Societies as well as further scientific networking.

Requirements:
Completed academic university studies (Master's degree) in social and cultural anthropology (ethnology) or related discipline (Sociology, Social Sciences)

Desirable:
- very good academic record in the field of social and cultural anthropology (ethnology)
- excellent knowledge of English and Turkish
- field research experience
- Good knowledge of and interest in the research fields of affects and emotions as well as in the anthropology of the senses, urban anthropology or migration
- a convincing research proposal on the above-mentioned topic.
