Fachbereich Geowissenschaften - Institut für Meteorologie AG Strahlung und FernerkundungResearch Assistant (Postdoc) (m/f/d) Full-time job Limited for 3 years Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L FU Reference code: PostDoc_dust Bewerbungsende: 06.12.2022

Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Mineral dust is a global player in the Earth system and contributes significantly to the global atmospheric aerosol load. Although essential for understanding the Earth system, numerical simulations of the atmospheric dust cycle show uncertainties. At the Institute of Meteorology, the working group "Radiation and Remote Sensing" researches current questions of the atmospheric life cycle of mineral dust aerosol. This research project aims at improving the representation of dust emission in Earth system models ultimately reducing model uncertainties.

Job description:

The position is available from 1.11.2022 for 3 years and is aimed at early career researchers who would like to focus their research on the exciting topic of "Dust in the Atmosphere" and link model development with the investigation of the role of dust in the Earth system. The central research topic of the future position holder is the further development of the parameterization of dust emission processes in a global aerosol-atmosphere model as well as the investigation of the interannual variability of the atmospheric dust concentration and its climate impacts. There is an obligation to participate in teaching (BSc and MSc in Meteorology) with 4 semester hours per week.

Requirements:

Successfully completed PhD in meteorology, atmospheric physics, physics or a comparable sub-field of physical geosciences.

Desirable:

Sound knowledge of aerosol modelling, experience with aerosol-atmosphere models or atmospheric circulation models, programming languages (Python) and UNIX/Linux-based computing environments. Furthermore, knowledge of mineral dust aerosol, experience in publishing and presenting research results, and very good written and spoken English skills are desirable. Interest in interdisciplinary work.
