Fachbereich Geowissenschaften - Institut für Geologische Wissenschaften Arbeitsbereich Mineralogie-PetrologieResearch assistant (praedoc) (m/f/d) with 75%part-time job limited to 4 years Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L FU reference code: ResearchAssistent_Min-Pet_02/2024 Bewerbungsende: 23.04.2024

Updated: 7 days ago

The position is located in the Mineralogy-Petrology group (Prof. Dr. John) at the Institute of Geological Sciences, whose research focuses on the thermodynamics of fluids and rocks, fluid flow of subduction zones and orogens, and time scales of metamorphic and metasomatic processes. The research group offers an intercultural, open-minded, versatile and family-friendly working environment.

Job description:
As research assistant and doctoral student (opportunity for a doctorate is given) your goal will be to compare garnet replacement textures and associated compositional modification across different metamorphic settings from the perspective that differences in the duration and rate fluid flux across these environments will be reflected in these textures. To describe the garnet textures and quantify garnet composition you will be required to use both a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Probe Micro-Analyser (EPMA). The project will also require ensuring that the conditions of metamorphism for the environments from which the garnet samples are derived are adequately constrained. To constrain the conditions of metamorphism you will need to assess the pressure, temperature and amount fluid present during metamorphism using thermodynamic modelling. Finally, garnet textural and compositional analysis will be compared with numerical models of garnet replacement, with the objective of quantifying the rate, and duration of fluid infiltration/production required to produce the observed textures.

Requirements:
Completed scientific degree or university degree (MA) in the field of mineralogy or geology.

Desirable:
- Very good MA degree in geosciences
- Very good written and spoken English
- A good background in metamorphic petrology with some familiarity of the theory but not necessarily the use of thermodynamic modelling.
- some experience with the use of analytical tools (SEM and EPMA), specifically microbeam techniques for imaging and in-situ quantitative analysis of phase composition.
- A previous knowledge of or a willingness to learn numerical methods for solving partial differential equations
