The appointed candidate will assume responsibilities in research and teaching in the field ofelementary education/German language teaching
Appointment requirements are governed by Article 102a of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).
Successful candidates should hold a university degree, preferably in the field of elementary education with a specialization in German, as well as a doctorate in the field. They should demonstrate a research focus in education for primary school children (grades 1-6), including expertise in teaching methods for German as a foreign language/multilingualism, early writing development and literacy, introducing children to literature/children’s and youth literature and media, written language acquisition, and assessing language competency. In addition, they should have a fundamental understanding of heterogeneous learning contexts, factoring in topics such as multilingualism and inclusion. Furthermore, applicants should have relevant teaching experience at the university level in German language education and demonstrate a history of excellent research work, ideally within an international context. They should also have experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects. The ability to teach in German is essential for this position.
Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:
The new professor will continue to develop their own research profile in German language education as well as contribute to joint research projects at Freie Universität and other institutions. The candidate will be responsible for training BA and MA students in the areas “Learning fields in German and early writing development,” “Didactical concepts for German and German as a foreign language,” and/or “German language education and classroom research.” The scope of the professorship should also include working closely with the Dahlem School of Education as well as other departments and divisions that offer teacher training programs at Freie Universität Berlin, including the Department of Philosophy and Humanities (Institute of German and Dutch Languages and Literatures, Teaching of German Language and Literature, German as a Second Language). The new professor will also be expected to address gender and diversity issues in their research and teaching.
The position entails a three-year appointment as a civil servant for a fixed period (“Beamter/Beamtin auf Zeit”). Following a successful midterm review (“Zwischenevaluation”), the position can be extended for another three years.
