Freie Universität Berlin in cooperation with Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is looking to fill a W3 professorship in behavioral biology at Freie Universität’s Institute of Biology.

The Berlin University Alliance (BUA) has established “Joint Berlin Professorships” in order to promote scientific cooperation. These professorships are designed to further develop and expand upon innovative, groundbreaking areas of research and thus strengthen the alliance between Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin.

Appointment requirements are governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).

Applicants should have a doctorate in a subject directly related to behavioral biology, with a background in international research activities in the area of the genetic/molecular/biological principles underlying behavior, neural mechanisms of behavior, or interactions between the environment/habitat and behavior. They should use quantitative methods and conduct research on a model vertebrate (e.g., fish, birds, rodents), which should connect with the opportunities relating to animal husbandry and research on test animals available at Freie Universität Berlin and within the State of Berlin. The candidate’s research profile will link to one or more research areas at the Institute of Biology (neurobiology, genome biology, evolution, ecology) as well as existing or future joint projects. They will have a record of published research in respected journals with international visibility and experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects. They will also be able to conduct courses in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in biology, especially behavioral biology, in German or English.

The new appointee will be expected to cooperate closely with other BUA partners, especially Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and integrate themselves in joint research initiatives (for example, the NeuroCure Cluster of Excellence). The appointee will incorporate ethical aspects of animal testing and address gender and diversity in their teaching.

The Berlin University Alliance is made up of three Berlin-based universities – Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Its members work together to promote research and teaching in Berlin with the goal of making the city a leading international hub for science.
