Offer Description

In the Department of Epidemiological Methods and Etiological Research, the Unit Behavior and Health at the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS offers a position for an

Epidemiologist (m/f/d)

as a research associate/PhD student

Salary scale 13 of the German public sector salary system (TV-L) with 25.5 hours/week (part time).

The position can be started at the earliest possible date under conditional release of funds and provided it receives administrative clearance. The position is limited to three years and is expected to result in a PhD degree. An extension of the contract is possible upon availability of funding.

As an epidemiological research institute, the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology BIPS aims to identify the causes of health problems and to develop new concepts for disease prevention. It is one of the most renowned epidemiological research institutes in Germany and works closely with various partners at the national and international level.

The candidate will primarily work on the provision and shared reuse of primary data collected within the IDEFICS/I.Family cohort and similar child and birth cohorts. The IDEFICS/I.Family study includes a variety of data from more than 21.000 children from nine European countries. Among others, anthropometric characteristics, various metabolic blood parameters, blood pressure, ultrasound of the heel bone, objectively measured physical activity and dietary habits have been assessed. This rich source of data offers the opportunity to describe the age- and sex-specific distribution of physiological parameters and to address etiological questions that are of high scientific and clinical relevance. To achieve that, pooling the data with other well-phenotyped children and adolescent cohorts should be conducted. Methods and routines for calibrating and merging the data from various studies according to the FAIR principles should be developed and tested. Based on the pooled data, age- and sex-specific reference values for various clinically relevant parameters in childhood and adolescence should be derived and internationally published. Subsequently, the research activities will be expanded to include new biomarkers and innovative research questions in cooperation with other international cohort studies.
