The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und ‑prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:

The construction of buildings from wood and the use of insulating materials from renewable raw materials is an objective which needs to be supported by research for reasons of environmental protection, such as the reduction of CO2  emissions. The increasing number of timber construction projects worldwide, show that building with wood can be used as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional construction methods. Use your research to contribute to the fire safety of timber constructions and thus to climate protection. The tasks include:

  • Carrying out analyses of fire safety of constructions made of wood, taking into account e.g. processes such as smoldering and glowing
  • Evaluation of fire tests on constructions made of wood
  • Set up computational models that take into account physical and chemical processes such as smoldering, pyrolysis, fire spread, formation of a char layer by coupling heat transport processes
  • Computational study of selected structures made of wood and evaluation of the structures with respect to the load-bearing capacity of the residual cross-section
  • Research of mathematical-physical models for modeling the fire spread within wooden structures
  • Evaluation, documentation and assessment of the results from experimental and numerical investigations
  • Publication and presentation of the results as well as interdisciplinary exchange

Your qualifications:

  • Successful scientific degree (Diploma/Master) specializing in civil engineering, physical engineering, process engineering or a similar discipline
  • Knowledge in modeling with methods of numerical fluid mechanics – CFD
  • Knowledge of structural fire protection in timber construction would be an advantage
  • Knowledge in modeling fire processes with CFD methods would be an advantage
  • Experience in conducting experiments would be an advantage connected with the willingness at times to work on the BAM area in Horstwalde with TTS
  • Good knowledge of German and English language (spoken and written)
  • Ability to publish and to present scientific results
  • Willingness to carry out missions
