Developer in the field of scientific databases (m/f/d)

The position has a salary level up to TV-L 13 according to the qualification and is initially limited to 2 years with the perspective to become a permanent position. The position is offered as full time (39.8 hours per week).

BRENDA , BRaunschweig ENzyme DAtabase, established in 1987, is the most comprehensive and widely used enzyme information resource. BRENDA provides free access information on classified enzymes, their function, occurrence, genetic context, metabolic role, structure, and specificity. The datasets are used by thousands of scientists of all areas of life sciences worldwide as a basis for their research. As a part of the BRENDA team, your task will be the implementation of the new BRENDA website and the development of a new data update pipeline in close coordination with members of the BRENDA team, as well as developers from other teams at the DSMZ.

Your profile:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field
  • Proficiency in web development, knowledge of HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript
  • Experience in one or more object-oriented programming languages (Python, PHP, Java, C#, C++...), hands-on experience with Python is an asset
  • Knowledge of relational (SQL) or document-based databases (NoSQL e.g. MongoDB) or interest in becoming familiar with them
  • Effective communication and collaboration abilities in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Good knowledge of German and English
  • Knowledge in the administration of Linux server systems is an asset

The position is located in Braunschweig, and is not suitable for fully remote work.

The Leibniz Institute DSMZ-German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures establishes an integrated suite of scientific databases of fundamental relevance for life sciences. The databases include BRENDA, SILVA, LPSN, BacDive and TYGS which are developed in a highly coordinated manner. A dedicated team of 22 scientists and software engineers creates a research data infrastructure which will significantly improve the access to curated and standardized biological data. The resulting data platform DSMZ Digital Diversity will provide an integrated resource and will allow to link and comprehensively analyze the different types of scientific data from all domains of life sciences.
