The successful applicant will cover research and teaching in the field of computational archaeology with a focus on data analysis and modelling.
Appointment requirements are governed bySection 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).
In addition, the candidate should hold a university degree in an archaeological discipline or, alternatively, in computer science or one of its related fields with an extensive record of research on archaeological questions. She or he should be a specialist in one or several of the following areas in relation to the analysis of archaeological data:
- numerical and multivariate statistical analysis, Bayesian statistics
- data mining and big data analysis
- modelling
- machine learning.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate international, outstanding research activities and teaching at the university level. This should include high-level research activities in an interdisciplinary context and experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects. Candidates must have very good knowledge of German or English and be able to teach in the respective language.
Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:
We expect the new professor to participate in designing and leading joint projects. She or he will teach bachelor’s and master’s courses in the Ancient Studies degree program (WE 3), while developing specific modules for master’s degree programs taught in German and English. She or he will be expected to work closely with the Einstein Center Chronoi, the Berliner Antike-Kolleg, and the Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies. Appointees should also supervise and implement knowledge transfer activities, and work closely with institutions in the field of mathematics and computer science in Berlin, especially at Freie Universität Berlin. Candidates must have a keen interest in acquiring adequate language skills in German or English (as the case may be) within a period of three years from the date of employment. The new professor will also be expected to teach courses in ways that are sensitive to gender and diversity issues.
