The appointed candidate will cover research and teaching in Jewish Studies with a focus on medieval and (early) modern Jewish history, the history of religion, and philosophy. The appointment will form part of an existing network of regional expertise in the subject at Freie Universität Berlin.

Appointment requirements are governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz – BerIHG).

Successful candidates will hold a university degree in the area of Judaism/Jewish Studies or a university degree with a focus on Jewish studies. They should also hold a doctoral degree in the area of Jewish Studies or another subject area relevant to the purposes of the professorship. They should demonstrate a research and teaching focus in the area of medieval and (early) modern developments in Jewish history, religious history and philosophy in the context of Arab-Islamic and Christian majority cultures, combined with experience in working with historical, cultural and philosophical topics. The new professor will be expected to engage with gender and diversity aspects in research and teaching, and to have experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects. Ideally, the appointee will also have experience in the area of knowledge transfer. In addition, she or he should have experience with carrying out study or research activities in Israel. The new professor should have an extensive international teaching record with a history of positive evaluations at the university level and be able to demonstrate a record of outstanding research work. She or he should have excellent knowledge of written and spoken German and English, enabling her or him to teach in both languages, along with excellent knowledge of Classical and Modern Hebrew and another language relevant to the research areas named above.

Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:

The new professor will be expected to participate in Freie Universität’s research networks and to work closely with the Berlin-Brandenburg Selma Stern Center for Jewish Studies. She or he will also assist in developing the close relationship between Freie Universität’s Institute for Jewish Studies and the American-Jewish Touro College Berlin. Furthermore, the appointee should contribute to the development of the existing bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, especially course offerings in English. She or he will assist in the development of interdisciplinary research contexts within Berlin with a view to their relevance for the field, and participate in international collaborations in teaching and research as part of Freie Universität’s strategic partnership with universities in Israel. The appointee will also be expected to engage in public outreach in non-university contexts, especially with respect to the press and other media outlets. The new professor should demonstrate sensitivity to gender and diversity issues in the context of their teaching, research, and administrative duties.
