Offer Description

The Furlong lab at EMBL Heidelberg combines genomics, genetics and computational biology to obtain a functional understanding of how our genome is regulated. We combine interdisciplinary approaches, including single cell genomics, chromatin conformation capture approaches, and imaging with computational methods such as machine learning, to uncover general principles of genome regulation. The interdisciplinary and international team combines both experimental and computational (wet and dry) approaches, and is a highly collaborative environment to perform cutting-edge research.

We are looking for a highly motivated computational biologist/bioinformatician (either post-doc or staff position) to collaborate within the team in diverse projects. You will work on diverse types of NGS data, collaborating with experimental and computational biologists in a dynamic, open and creative culture. The successful candidate will lead data analyses to examine different aspects of genome regulation, such as large-scale chromatin conformation capture data in different conditions, including mutants, to undercover 3D principles of how enhancers interact with their target gene’s promoters. A second direction involves extensive single cell data of different modalities across different conditions.

Your role

As part of the research team, you will participate in multiple projects and develop your own project in collaboration with lab members, and shape your research profile in several of the following areas:

  • Conduct integrative data analysis for biological discovery
    • Chromatin conformation capture data at large-scale
    • Single-cell ATAC and RNA-seq data analysis at ultra-large scale
    • Mutant and natural sequence variation data
  • Develop pipelines that other lab members can use
  • Model the impact of perturbations on 3D chromatin interactions
  • Discern the relationship between chromatin state and gene expression
  • Model cell states, transitions and genetic dependencies

Skills/Qualifications
  • A PhD in computer science, bioinformatics or an equivalent related field
  • Extensive experience with large-scale NGS data analyses
  • Intermediate-to-high level skills in R and Python programming are required
  • Experience with workflow management systems (e.g. Snakemake) and cluster computing environments (e.g. SLURM) are highly desired
  • Excellent organizational skills and enjoy working in an independent and proactive manner in a highly motivated, collegial international scientific environment
  • Ability to present and visualise results in an intuitive manner e.g. Rmarkdown
  • Interests in computational algorithms, sequence alignments and biological discovery are a plus.

You might also have

You are self-motivated and excited by contributing to biological discoveries, you are interested in interdisciplinary cuting-edge science, enjoy collaborative work and like to communicate concepts and results and brain-storm with colleagues.

Why join us

This is a great opportunity to develop expertise in the analyses of diverse types of state-of-the-art omics data and methods of data integration and modeling. You will be a crucial part of biological discovery in diverse areas of genome regulation, cell fate decisions, and development. You will be part of a very interactive, collaborative and inter-cultural team.

EMBL offers attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family-friendly working environment. Competitive salary and social security benefits, financial support for relocation, a relaxed culture, professional development, an on-site nursery, canteen and other staff facilities make EMBL a great place to work.

** Don’t meet every single requirement? We are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply nevertheless.

What else you need to know

We are Europe’s research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1900 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.

Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research. The working language of the institute is English.

In your online application, you will be asked to include a cover letter, CV and the contact details of 3 referees.
