The Genome Centre Cologne at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) in Cologne seeks with immediate effect a Bioinformatician (m/f/d) (Post-Doc or M.Sc. level) to join a state-of-the-art genomics service group. We are looking for a candidate with a completed scientific doctorate or M.Sc. grade in bioinformatics, biostatistics or a comparable field. Applicants with degrees in related fields such as molecular biology, molecular genetics and general biology and a track record in bioinformatics will also be considered.
The candidate should be familiar with bioinformatics tools for analyzing NGS sequencing data (Illumina, Pacific Biosciences, Oxford Nanopore) and single cell technology e.g. 10x Genomics. The candidate should be able to discuss and give advice on biological questions that users want to solve using sequencing, including in the pre-project phase.
Bioinformatic tools encompass programs for sequence quality testing, sequence comparison, sequence assembly, variant detections, RNAseq assessment, phylogeny, sequence annotation, etc.
The candidate should have good programming skills in languages used for the development of bioinformatic tools (e.g. Python, Perl, R) and in UNIX shell script development. The candidate should be able to translate complex problems into efficient scripts and should be able to develop programs for parallel processing. The applicant is expected to be team-oriented, have good communication skills and interact with the current lab manager on a daily basis.
Fluent written and spoken communication in English is essential, and German would be highly advantageous.
The position is initially limited to two years. Payment and benefits are based on German TVöD.
