The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön is an internationally oriented institution whose research focuses on the principles, mechanisms and effects of evolutionary change. Around 180 employees from more than 30 nations currently work at our institute in the departments of Theoretical Biology and Microbial Population Biology, as well as in a number of independent research groups.

We are looking for a new member of staff to join our Bioinformatics Group, a Bioinformatician (m/f/d) in Comparative Genomics.

This is a permanent, full-time position, part-time is possible.

The Bioinformatics Group at the MPI Plön works on fast methods for genome comparison using string algorithms. Examples of the group’s work include a tool for phylogenomics, phylonium , and a tool for finding diagnostic regions from genome sequences, fur .


Your responsibilities
  • Contribute to scientific publications
  • Optimize the performance of software developed in the group and specify new functionality
  • Deliver software developed in the group through package repositories and docker images
  • Identify and benchmark state-of-the-art genomics tools for integration in the research carried out by the group
  • Provide user support for software developed in the group
  • Contribute to the teaching offered by the group

Your profile
  • PhD or MSc in Bioinformatics or Computer Science
  • Excellent skills in genome analysis on the Unix command line and in R
  • Excellent ability to act and communicate both independently and in a team-oriented manner
  • Strong experience in high-throughput or high-performance computing
  • Experience in versioning with git
  • Experience in building docker images
  • Fluency in English
