BA-/MA-thesis: Power modulation in spot-welding of thin-walled die-cast components

Updated: 20 days ago
Location: Aachen, NORDRHEIN WESTFALEN

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT at RWTH Aachen University, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT, Europe's leading center for basic and contract research in the field of laser technology, is offering the opportunity to write a thesis in the field of "Joining and Cutting" on the subject of "Spot Seam Laser Welding".

Due to its physical and mechanical properties, cast aluminum is versatile and can be used in almost every industry. Depending on the casting process, however, cast aluminum alloys can only be welded to a limited extent. Weld spatter formation, weld pool ejections, crack and pore formation can lead to rejection of the material bond, which is why welding cast aluminum alloys is a particular challenge.

What you will do

  • Recording the state of the art
  • Independent planning and execution of tests for laser beam welding of aluminum base materials
  • Carrying out different methods for destructive and non-destructive material testing
  • Documentation and discussion of the results

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, materials science or a similar field
  • Interest in technical problems in application-oriented research
  • Independent, organized and structured way of working
  • Initial experience in the field of laser technology is an advantage, but not required

What you can expect

  • A professional and dynamic working atmosphere
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Excellent machinery and equipment
  • Exciting and challenging areas of work in applied research
  • Freedom to develop your own ideas, projects for your field of study
  • Flexible working hours that allow you to combine your studies and professional practice
  • Very good travel options (bus, car)
  • Exciting seminars, events and team-building measures

The position is limited to the end of the thesis.
