BA-/MA-/PA-Thesis: AI-based process development of extreme high-speed laser cladding

Updated: 25 days ago
Location: Aachen, NORDRHEIN WESTFALEN

In cooperation with the Chair of Laser Technology LLT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT offers the opportunity to write a thesis.

The Laser Material Deposition (LMD) department at the Fraunhofer ILT works closely with partners from industry and research on the development of process and system technology for laser metal deposition. The EHLA process (extreme high-speed laser cladding) developed and patented at the Fraunhofer ILT increases efficiency and cost-effectiveness through a modified powder feed and is attracting great interest from industry. In order to establish the technology in various industrial applications, further research into process development, digitalization and automation is required.

After an interview, the topics can be specialized and tailored to you.

What you will do

  • Further development of the EHLA process using AI methods
  • Experimental work on process development and digitalization of the process
  • Establishment of a data pipeline for the preparation of data to use modern AI methods

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying a technical or scientific degree program (e.g. mechanical engineering, materials science, materials engineering, industrial engineering, physics, computer science)
  • Interest in technical problems in application-oriented research
  • A responsible, independent and structured way of working
  • Previous knowledge in the field of additive manufacturing, laser technology, programming (NC, Python, C, etc.) is desirable, but not essential

What you can expect

  • Practice-oriented thesis in an innovative working environment
  • Excellent equipment in the laboratories and first-class machines and devices
  • A creative and interdisciplinary working environment in a highly motivated team
  • Flexible working hours for a better work-study balance
  • Very good transportation options (bus; car)

The position is temporary until completion of the thesis.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.
