*Brief description of field of application*

The Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is one of Germany’s most research-intensive Medical faculties. We aim to recruit an Associate Professor (W2, tenure track) at the Department of Biochemistry, located in the Berlin’s central Charité campus. The candidate will represent the subject Biochemistry and Systems Biochemistry in research and teaching. Interested applicants should hold a PhD or MD and demonstrate a strong research track record in the specialized research area of Biochemistry and/or Systems Biology.

*Your area of responsibility*

The W2 professorship is ideal for candidates who carry out both experimental and/or computer-aided basic biochemical research. Current work in the Department of Biochemistry focuses, for example, on the role of neuronal signaling networks in health and disease, as well as design, evolution and regulation of metabolic networks at the systems scale. Ideally, the group established by the W2 Professor will complement these research areas by using methods of synthetic or systems biology, computational biology, or network biology. The research focus may be (but not necessarily has to be) linked to a specific tissue or disease model, but concentrates on biochemical networks, functional genomics, biochemical and signaling interactions between cells, tissues or organs, inter-cellular or inter-species networks.

We would like to encourage scientists who have already gained experience in running an independent research project at a junior group leader level to apply; however, we also welcome applications from outstanding candidates at different career stages The Institute for Biochemistry assumes an active role in Charité's curriculum in medicine, dentistry, biomedicine and biochemistry. Although scientific achievement and the ability for development are key, didactic competence and substantial engagement in teaching activities as well as the commitment to student education within Charité's curriculum are equally important.

*Your profile*

Qualifications: According to paragraph 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (BerlHG), the academic prerequisites for this position entail a scientific degree (Ph.D and/or M.D.) in a subject area of the natural sciences or medicine. It also requires the demonstration of pedagogic suitability, can be demonstrated, for instance, through teaching experience in institutes of higher education, a junior-professorship, professorship or postdoctoral thesis (Habilitation) or equivalent scientific achievement which may be acquired within or from outside higher education institutions.

Applications should include a short concept paper (up to a maximum of two pages DIN-A4, excl. figures and references) on previous achievements as well as briefly outline future research projects. This text should briefly emphasize the synergies that can be created by the applicant's future research work with the existing Institute of Biochemistry (Cellular Biochemistry, Prof. Eickholt and Metabolic Systems, Prof. Ralser).
