The Faculty of Language, Literature and Media Studies invites applications for a tenured appointment in the field of English Studies as
Assistant Professor (Juniorprofessorin/Juniorprofessor) with a focus on Anglophone Literatures and Cultures (W1 with Tenure Track to W3 LBesG) (f/m/d)
starting 1st of October 2024.
The successful applicant will represent the above-mentioned area of expertise in both research and teaching. This tenure-track position is open to early-career researchers who demonstrate an extraordinary potential for an academic career.
As the English Department intends to strengthen its focus on Global Anglophone Literatures and Cultures, applicants are expected to demonstrate a research focus not only in British literature and culture but also in postcolonial Anglophone literatures and cultures beyond Great Britain and North America (e.g., in African, Asian, Australian, New Zealand, or Caribbean literatures). Applicants are expected to develop a further research focus in Anglophone Media before tenure is conferred (e.g. in film, TV, streaming, digital media). We expect the successful applicant to represent the area of Anglophone literatures, cultures and media in its historical depth and regional variety upon receiving tenure. We expect an excellent PhD degree with a relevant focus.
Tasks attendant to the position include research, teaching, and taking exams in the English department’s degree programmes—particularly the teaching programmes (“of Education”) and specialized degrees (“of Arts”)—as well as participation in academic self-administration. Additionally, we expect the successful applicant to be involved in the interdisciplinary work of Trier University’s research clusters and centers (e.g., the Center for Postcolonial and Gender Studies, the Trier Center for American Studies, the Trier Center for Canadian Studies).
The official tasks result from the Higher Education Act of Rhineland-Palatinate (§ 48 HochSchG – Higher Education Act). Applicants must meet the general employment requirements according to public services law and the Higher Education Act of Rhineland-Palatinate (§ 54 HochSchG). We expect the ability to teach classes in German.
The employment term (limited term with civil service status) will generally run for six years. After three years and not later than the end of the fourth year of employment, an interim evaluation will be conducted. This evaluation is to give an orientation with regard to the standard of performance in teaching and research. After a final successful evaluation as Assistant Professor after six years, and provided the general requirements are fulfilled, the candidate will qualify for appointment to a tenured full professorship (W3). We refer to § 50 (5) 5 and 6 HochSchG – Higher Education Act in this context.
