Job description:

DLR's Institute of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul investigates and develops innovative diagnostic, maintenance and modification technologies to make the operation of aircraft more efficient through predictive and demand-oriented maintenance. In the Product Life Cycle Management department, we are dedicated to the research and development of innovative methods for evaluating and optimizing sustainability in the aviation industry. One of our research focuses is the life cycle-based economic and ecological evaluation of aircraft maintenance processes and innovative aircraft concepts.

To strengthen our interdisciplinary team in the field of coupled economic and ecological assessment of aircraft life cycles, we are looking for a research associate to start as soon as possible. We are seeking for motivated and solution-oriented personalities who want to make aviation more sustainable. Your task will be to develop and apply advanced methods for linking the fields of life cycle evaluation, uncertainty management and multi-criteria decision analysis with the aim of deriving robust maintenance and modification strategies in aviation. You will identify optimized strategies that are highly resilient to varying and unpredictable scenarios in order to find a balance between economic, ecological and technical objectives. Your work will contribute to sustainable solutions for the aviation industry. Your role is essential for the development and application of advanced technologies and methods with a significant impact on the future of our research and industry.

Your tasks in detail:

  • Review of the state-of-the-art regarding the combination of economic and ecological life cycle assessments.
  • Development of concepts for the implementation of integrated economic and ecological life cycle assessments including multi-criteria decision analysis and decision making.
  • Identification and integration of suitable techniques of multi-criteria decision-making into our in-house methods and models for continuous improvement.
  • Systematic identification and evaluation of uncertainties (e.g. in relation to costs, environmental impact, technological developments and operational performance) and their integration into multi-criteria decision-making.
  • Application of the developed methods in research projects to derive recommendations for more sustainable maintenance strategies (e.g. for new aircraft configurations with hydrogen propulsion).
  • Scientific publication and presentation of the results at project meetings, international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.

This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest scientific organisation.
