Job description:

Are you passionate about pioneering technology and making a tangible impact on maritime security? The Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures has an exciting opportunity waiting for you!

In today's interconnected world, safeguarding critical infrastructures is vital for economic stability and societal well-being. Our institute is dedicated to the development of innovative concepts and state-of-the-art technologies that protect our key maritime infrastructures.

Within our Maritime Security Technologies department lies the core of the tech exploration. The Sensor Technology research group is focusing on active optical instruments and cutting-edge remote measurement methods, like gated viewing and short-wave infrared sensor technology. In parallel, our Methods and Processing research group analyses and processes the sensor and instrument data often in real-time, including from novel acoustic systems.

Your role will be at the intersection of these groups, leading the charge in developing solutions for near real-time data processing for these sensors and instruments. Your piece of the puzzle? This will include crafting hardware-based processing solutions using advanced technologies like FPGAs. You'll be the architect behind merging data from various sensors, weaving them into our institute's maritime awareness system.

If pursuing a PhD aligns with your ambitions, we're here to support you on this way!

Your mission:

  • innovating and refining hardware-based methods for processing image and acoustic data
  • ensuring instrument performance through self-monitoring and safe operation methods
  • dealing existing acoustic and image data processing methods, optimizing them for real-time action on embedded systems
  • rigorous testing and validation of your solutions
  • integrating acoustic and optical data into our maritime awareness system

Are you ready to improve maritime technology security? Let's collaborate, innovate, and secure our maritime future!

This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest scientific organisation.
