Offer Description

Area of research:

Scientific / postdoctoral posts,Sonstiges

Job description:

The Institute of Transport Research investigates linkages and interdependencies between transportation, economy, society and environment in an integrated and systemic manner. Research is based on the analysis and modelling of mobility behaviour of households and businesses. Around 70 scientists work at the institute, with an annual turnover of approximately 10 mio Euros. Partnerships exist with universities and other research institutes as well as national and international institutions of business, administration and policy. Important customers are national governmental departments, the European Commission, federations and leading industrial enterprises.

The department “Means of Transport” is looking to add at the earliest possible date a researcher with knowledge in statistics and econometrics to their Team “Public transport and intermodality”. Particularly desirable are advanced, well-founded knowledge of statistics and probability theory, ideally Bayesian statistics, or the interest and willingness to acquire knowledge and methods of Bayesian statistics. The division investigates innovative transportation services as well the demands and appropriate conditions for passenger and freight traffic. The research of the Team “Public transport and intermodality” focusses on the design of transportation services and the acceptance and preferences of potential users. The goal is to align transportation services with user demands and thereby contribute to a mobility transition.

We work in interdisciplinary teams. Our methods comprise statistical analysis of quantitative data on user behaviour and stated and revealed preference studies on mobility behaviour. We also use qualitative methods in particular interviews, focus groups and co-creative methods.

Your tasks comprise the following:

  • working in research projects in the area of transportation with focus on public transport and intermodality
  • conception and execution of stated and revealed preferences studies on acceptance, user preferences and transport demand (collecting primary data, analysis and evaluation, presentation of results)
  • presentation and analysis of data on transport behaviour using statistical methods
  • applying for research grants and leading institutional and third party funded projects on topics relating to public transport and novel mobility services/intermodality
  • connecting empirical insights from research on acceptance with agent-based transport modelling.
  • writing project reports
  • publishing research findings in scientific publications and the media, and presenting at conferences and project meetings

This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest scientific organisation.
