Job description:

The Institute for the Protection of Terrestrial Infrastructures aims to provide stable services to society. Digital twins enable monitoring and response to crises and attacks, as well as analysis and optimization of resilience of terrestrial infrastructures.

In the department "Digital Twins for Infrastructures", the structure and behavior of complex networked supply systems, socio-technical interrelations, as well as buildings and technical facilities is modelled and simulated. Currently, the generation of digital twins is associated with high costs due to the high amount of manual modeling work. In order to make the generation more efficient, this process should be automated. The use of existing technical drawings and data sheets, such as floor plans, circuit diagrams or manufacturer’s specifications, is particularly essential for existing buildings and technical systems.

Since nowadays most of them are still only available in analog form, AI/ML-based methods should be used in the context of automation to convert information into a digitally usable, structured form. Possible approaches include the use of machine learning to recognize standardized symbols, or identify structural relationships.

Your tasks are

  • familiarization and literature research on the topics of plan recognition, graph similarity metrics
  • collecting and annotating a necessary data set
  • implementation and training of artificial neural networks for segmentation
  • selection of a suitable metric and evaluation for comparison of the implemented with the existing method
  • acquisition, scientific analysis and presentation of the research results

This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany's largest scientific organisation.
