Job description:

In the space and IT sector, the IT team of the Microgravity User Support Center (MUSC at Cologne), a subsidiary of the German Space Operations Center, is looking for an IT and space enthusiast to help us with fascinating, space-related, and diverse IT challenges for the operation of the rover component of the upcoming MMX (Martian Moons eXploration) mission. The MMX-Mission shall investigate the two Martian moons (Phobos and Deimos) and return material of the moon Phobos to the Earth. Part of the mission is a German-French rover. The rover shall land on Phobos and investigate its surface. This mission is a major challenge. It will be the first landing system on one of the Martian moon’s surface. Start of the MMX mission will be in 2024, arrival in the Mars system 2025 and the rover landing is planned for 2027. To operate this mission, the information and communication technologies of MUSC, including the centralized ground infrastructure, have to be maintained, serviced and continuously developed and supervised.

The focus of the work is on planning, implementation, testing and operation of the IT ground infrastructure and the scientific ground facility of the MMX rover mission. The following operational tasks are to be performed in this context:

  • planning, realization, integration and verification of IT systems like network components, firewalls, virtual systems, servers and clients
  • ensuring the availability of IT systems by regular verification and monitoring of the systems and performing corrective actions
  • monitoring of data streams to detect and correct anomalies
  • configuration and verification of mission control systems (Telemetry/Telecommand)
  • taking part in coordination and mission meetings with international partners
  • continuous adaptation and improvement of IT security measures and systems
  • autonomous error analysis and correction of various IT systems
  • support of the operating engineers at the consoles during operational phases and validation tests
  • continuous renewal of hardware and software in terms of obsolescence management
  • documentation of systems and processes
  • hybrid work with 2 or 3 days at home office possible
