Job description:

The Remote Sensing Technology Institute has developed real-time airborne camera and processing systems for rapid mapping and traffic monitoring application since 2007. The main research task focuses on digital camera systems (3K-, 4k-system), which in combination with an on-board computer unit for processing, a ground station and a powerful data link, enable real-time data evaluation for traffic, infrastructure and situation assessment. In a further step, a camera system for the EC 135 helicopter has been developed including hard- and software, which must be developed to market maturity for the purpose of transferring the technology to an industrial partner. This is being done as part of the FAIRS (Fast airborne situation assessment) project.

The main task is the further development of the processing chain for real-time processing of aerial image data from the 4k camera system on board the helicopter and at the ground station. In this context, the modules for traffic data acquisition from aerial image sequences are to be updated to the latest methods from the field of machine learning.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • conception and further development of robust algorithms for traffic data acquisition using Deep Learning methods.

  • revision of the whole processing chain with regard to: integration of the latest DL algorithms for traffic detection, considering DLR quality standards

  • transferring air-to-ground data transmission to LTE standard

  • conception and execution of test campaigns to test the developed procedures

  • design and development of software for sensor operators including user interfaces

  • development of a prototypical web service (WMS based) with web access (OpenLayers based) to display and distribute the acquired data

  • optimization of data processing at the ground station

  • programming of GUIs for the operation of the camera system and the ground station

  • documentation of the software chain and writing of user manuals

  • preparation of scientific publications and reports

  • instruction of technology partners in the operation and maintenance of the camera system
