The Group of Advanced Optical Technologies of DLR’s Institute of Communications and Navigation develops experimental laser communication systems for optical data links between satellites and optical ground stations as well as demonstrator platforms for testbed system verifications. The system development covers several disciplines such as optics, physics, electronics, programming and mechanics.

The successful applicant will support our team in the development of optical tracking sub-system for satellite communications. Foremost, they will perform theoretical study and simulation of various techniques for tracking of multiple (static) targets. In the next stage, control techniques for stabilization of a beam with varying intensity will be evaluated. In the practical part, laboratory setup will be used for demonstration of open- and/or closed-loop tracking of two or more targets (laser sources).

It is an excellent opportunity to work in a cutting-edge topic, gain experience on real optical hardware, and improve your engineering skills.

Main activities:

  • design of optical tracking control and state machine
  • optical and optomechanical systems design
  • performance analysis (angular resolution, dynamics)
  • setup of a laboratory demonstrator and its performance verification
  • programming of simulation and control tools (Python or Matlab) when necessary
