The International Research Training Group (IRTG) 2172 "PRoTECT: Plant Responses To Eliminate Critical Threats" (Speaker: Prof. Dr. Ivo Feussner) offers positions at the Georg-August-University Goettingen for

11 Ph.D candidates (f/m/d)
in the field of biotic and abiotic plant stress biology

beginning at June 1st, 2022 with a limited contract duration to May 31st, 2025. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (65% E13 TV-L).

The IRTG 2172 is a DFG-funded collaborative PhD program between the Georg-AugustUniversity (Goettingen, Germany) and the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada). Major scientific goal of the IRTG is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of plant adaptation to biotic and abiotic stress conditions and microbial infection strategies that are operational in different cellular and extracellular contexts and at different spatial scales. The IRTG offers an excellent experimental infrastructure in an international and interdisciplinary research environment. The broad-based PhD training program will enable the PhD candidates to address questions in plant stress biology at a system-wide level and offers many opportunities for the improvement of scientific and personal skills.

Candidates should fulfill the following requirements:
- A very good M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, microbiology or similar
- A strong background in one of the biological disciplines covered by the IRTG (molecular plant/microbe cell biology, fungal biology, biochemistry, plant and/or fungal genetics)
- Very good English skills (written and spoken)
- High motivation to spend part of the PhD time (i.e. several months) in the partner labs at UBC in Vancouver, Canada
