Offer Description

The atom probe tomography (APT) is a 4D imaging technique based on the field effect evaporation of atoms from a needle-shaped nanometric sample. APT combines sub-nanometer spatial resolution with high chemical sensitivity across the entire periodic table and its isotopes. APT is a rapidly developing technique in the field of condensed matter analysis. This project is part of the European project MIMOSA Project - HORIZON-EIC-2021-PATHFINDEROPEN which aims to extend the use of the new atomic probe assisted by terahertz pulses to biological materials encapsulated in sol-gel matrices. During this project, this new instrument will be used to analyze pure sol-gel (silica) matrix and then containing antibodies, liposomes, proteins. We also plan to explore other means of sample preparation, such as cryo-milling in FIB, and sample characterization such as scanning electron microscope (SEM).
The applicant will work to the analysis of different silica matrix with and without biomaterials inside, in order to prove the capabilities of the new illumination conditions. The project involves the design and set-up of new methods for sample encapsulation and preparation. The applicant will work to the analysis of the elaborated sample using APT and electron microscopy.

- Preparation of biological samples by encapsulation in a sol-gel silica matrix
- Preparation of biological samples by cryofixation in an aqueous solution and shaping with Gallium or Xenon ions in a scanning electron microscope.
- Atomic probe analysis of samples
- Analysis of samples using electron microscopy
- Data processing
- Presentations at meetings with partners and at conferences
- Writing scientific articles for publication

The GPM (Groupe de Physique des Matériaux, UMR CNRS 6634) is divided in 5 departments: Matériaux-Vieillissement-Mécanique, Instrumentation Scientifique, Nanosciences, Systèmes Désordonnés-Polymères et Nano-Santé-Physique. 150 people (60 Reserchers, 30 Engineers et 60 PhD/PostDoct/master student) work at GPM. The GPM is located on the Campus « Sciences et Ingénierie Rouen Normandie » (Saint Etienne du Rouvray / Rouen), one of the campus of the University of Rouen Normandie (7000m2).
The recruited researcher will work as a member of the instrumentation department, within the Physics under intense fields team (fundamental aspects of field-matter interaction , 2 researchers, 1 engineer, 1 PhDoc and 3 doctoral students). This team has been working since 2005 on the development of the atomic probe assisted by ultra-short pulses.
