Research position for star formation modeling

Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Gif sur Yvette, LE DE FRANCE
Deadline: 15 Feb 2024

The CEA astrophysics department (DAp) invites applications for a permanent research position, to begin before the end of the year 2024. DAp is part of the Institute of Research into the Fundamental Laws of the Universe (IRFU) at CEA Paris-Saclay. DAp is carrying out theoretical and numerical works of the star formation process in the interstellar medium with strong interest for the formation and evolution of protostellar disks. DAp is deeply involved in the development of adaptive mesh refinement codes able to tackle the multi-scale nature of the star formation and to self-consistently treat the relevant physical processes such as gravity, turbulence, magnetic field, dust and radiation. DAp is also conducting state-of-the-art observations of star-forming regions and protostellar disks and is dedicating specific efforts to foster synergy between simulation and observations.

Candidates applying to this position should have a PhD in astronomy and astrophysics, or in a closely related field. They should be recognized experts in the modelling of the interstellar medium with a strong expertise of the gas and dust dynamics as well as in numerical simulations. Experience in code development and in the production of synthetic observations will be greatly appreciated.

CEA Paris-Saclay is located 20 km south of Paris, France, in the vicinity of various universities and other research centers. The Paris region contains numerous research institutes with whom the DAp collaborates (e.g. IAP, IAS Orsay, Observatory of Paris-Meudon, APC). DAp gathers more than 100 faculty and staff members, 50 postdoctoral fellows, and 30 PhD students. DAp offers a lively and very active research environment of the highest international standards. The research at DAp covers many areas of observational, theoretical, and applied astrophysics.  Engineers and scientists at DAp participate in collaborations and surveys such as LSST, SKA, JWST, ATHENA, INTEGRAL, and SVOM.

Generous funding for conferences, collaborations, personal equipment and publications is available. The salary for this position is very competitive, and includes excellent health insurance, social security benefits, and family support. Applicants should submit by email (PDF format) their resume, motivation letter, bibliography and research plan and arrange for three reference letters to be sent before February 15, 2024.
