Offer Description
The mission consists of evolving a 3D digital atmospheric model with primitive equations extending from the ground to 120 km altitude with a vertical resolution around one kilometer. The forcing of the model will be carried out in the lower part of the model based on analyzes from the European center. The objective is to test whether the model better represents the variability of the mesosphere than current analyzes from the European center. This will involve adjusting the altitude domains and the intensity of the restoring force between the model itself, the ECMWF analysis data and the MSIS climatological model. Then it will be a matter of validating the simulations and atmospheric variability from lidar data distributed in different parts of the world.
The activities consist of
• Make the model operational
• Validate the model from Lidar data
• Launch a first experiment

The objective of this study is to carry out sensitivity experiments in order to better understand the triggering elements of sudden stratospheric heating and the switch into one of the standard modes of winter evolution of the middle atmosphere (Mariaccia et al., 2022) . The other application concerns the appearance of inversions in the mesosphere (Marriacia et al., 2023). The model will be forced using analyzes from the European center. This work is partly supported by the DGA for military applications.
The work will take place in Guyancourt at LATMOS. The LATMOS (Atmospheres and Space Observations Laboratory) is a mixed research unit specializing in the study of the fundamental physicochemical processes governing the terrestrial and planetary atmospheres and their interfaces with the surface, the ocean, and the interplanetary environment. The laboratory has a dual location in Paris and Guyancourt. For this, the Laboratory has developed strong instrumental expertise, built innovative instruments deployed from the ground and sometimes put into orbit or set off to meet other bodies in the solar system. Numerical atmospheric models are also developed and used to interpret the various observations. The recruited collaborator will work in close collaboration with the scientific manager of the project on the Guyancourt site, in a team made up of several doctoral students, and researchers from the STRATO department and other colleagues (researchers and engineers) involved on the measurement sites in the mainly part of the NDACC network.
